Registration to conduct a non-government school is required before a person can operate a school, or commence educating a child at a school. The purpose of registration is to ensure schools provide students with a high quality education and that the operation of the school continues to meet the criteria for registration specified in the Education Act 2004. Registration provides approval for a proprietor to operate a school at specified educational levels for a fixed period of time at an identified location within the ACT
When seeking approval to operate a new school, applicants must first obtain in-principle approval in writing from the Minister. The application for in-principle approval must be made no less than two years before the person proposes to apply for provisional registration and no more than four years before the proposed opening day.
An applicant who has been granted in-principle approval must apply in writing for provisional registration of the school at least six months before the first day of operation of the new school.
