Home Business Approvals

Many businesses conducted from a person's home do not need approval. These are referred to as a home occupation.

Approval is not required if the following criteria is met:

• causes no noticeable adverse impact to neighbours
• a maximum of two persons, and only bona fide residents, are employed on the land at any time;
• business related goods are not displayed in windows or outside the building;
• business related materials are stored within the confines of approved structures;
• the use does not, or is unlikely to cause pollution, create a health hazard or present a danger;
• commercial vehicles are parked within a garage or carport, on existing driveways within the land boundaries, or in a suitably screened location on the land;
• customer vehicles are parked on existing driveways within the land boundaries or in a suitably screened location on the land;
• traffic generated does not unacceptably affect the flow of local traffic;
• the maximum gross floor area used (including storage) is 40sq m; and
• retailing associated with the home occupation does not generate a detrimental increase in traffic, parking demand or noise in the surrounding area.
  You must apply for approval if your business employs one or more people who are not bona fide residents of the land or if it does not meet any of the criteria listed above.

To apply for approval you must complete a Development Application form, the home business checklist and provide the minimum documentation as set out in the checklist.
