Environmental Protection Agreements

Environmental protection agreements are formal agreements under the Environment Protection Act 1997 (the Act), between the EPA and people conducting certain activities that pose environmental risks. Environmental protection agreements allow scope for business to manage their environmental performance in partnership with the EPA rather than the EPA acting solely as enforcer.

Environmental protection agreements are required when undertaking Class B activities (PDF, 89kB) under the Act or activities that may have the potential to harm the environment. Environmental protection agreements are required to be formal written agreements between the EPA and the activity manager, and have effect for a specified period. Agreements can cover anything related to the environmental management of an activity, for example, a condition that the activity manager will seek to achieve progressively higher environmental standards over a period of time.
