Under the Heritage Act 2004 the ACT Heritage Council is responsible for keeping a register of heritage places and objects in the ACT. The ACT Heritage Register represents and protects the natural and cultural heritage of the ACT.
Anyone may nominate a place or object for provisional registration by submitting the appropriate form to the Council together with a detailed statement addressing the heritage significance criteria.
In the same way that places or objects can be proposed for registration because of their heritage significance, they can be proposed for removal from the Heritage Register due to loss of heritage significance due to events or processes such as destruction of a place or object or increased knowledge about the place or object.
